Context
Andrew Winter, born in Estonia near the Baltic Sea, was one of many artists’ captivated by Monhegan Island. But unlike the majority who came in the summertime and left by fall, Winter lived year-round with his artist wife, Mary, beginning in the 1930s. He produced an admirable body of paintings over their seventeen year-long residence, including this scene of White Head in the isolation and grandeur of winter.

Featured in “Maine and American Art: Farnsworth Art Museum” with thanks to the Henry Luce Foundation and Wyeth Foundation for American Art.
