Context
Low tide along the shoreline is the ideal time to go clamming, as air bubbles rise to the surface of the muddy flats from the clams just below. Here the flats on Teel Island dominate the composition, especially in the foreground, with houses and barns visible at the horizon. Splashes of vibrant color are sprinkled throughout, typical of Andrew Wyeth’s early watercolors.
