Context
One of some 120 panels Bellows did on Monhegan in summer 1913, it depicts a sailboat making its way out to sea against the waves with dark skies overhead. Rich colors, thickly applied, and expressive brushwork are emblematic of Bellows’s style and capture the dramatic scenery of the sea-swept island.
