Context
During his final stay in Maine, Bellows spent most of the summer and fall in Camden with his family, and painted this scene at Sherman’s Cove with Mount Battie in the distance with a young couple climbing the rocks for a view of a passing sailboat. He exaggerated the fall colors with intense hues, following his teacher Robert Henri’s admonition to paint “with the use of most pure colors… (with) gradations which do not actually exist in them.”

Featured in “Maine and American Art: Farnsworth Art Museum”.
