Context
Part of a series commissioned by Black Star for the 1959 National Geographic article “Monhegan: Maine’s Lobster Island,” the photo depicts one of Monhegan’s annual traditions. For a century, Trap Day, a community-wide event, commenced on January 1 when all hands gathered to help in the setting of lobster traps for the season. In this scene, the lobstermen, with artist Andrew Winter, load their wooden traps on dories.

Featured in “Maine and American Art: Farnsworth Art Museum” with thanks to the Henry Luce Foundation and Wyeth Foundation for American Art.
