Context
Ruohomaa was commissioned to shoot a photographic essay on a Washington, Maine town meeting for "Life" magazine, typifying the importance of these meetings held annually in small towns throughout New England. Even today, townspeople gather in spring after long, sometimes isolating winters, to reunite with neighbors, cast opinions and votes, in order to bolster community spirit and maintain rural governance.
