Context
From a series of ten silkscreen prints and eighteen paintings made by Indiana in homage to a group of paintings by Maine-born American modernist Marsden Hartley (1877-1943), this one includes words from President Kennedy’s 1963 speech in Berlin, “Ich bin ein Berliner” – I am a Berliner. The words “Der Amerikanische Maler,” The American Painter, refer to both Hartley and Indiana.

Featured in “Maine and American Art: Farnsworth Art Museum” with thanks to the Henry Luce Foundation and Wyeth Foundation for American Art.
