Context
This work was one of several commissioned by Charles Scribner’s Sons to illustrate a new edition of Jane Porter’s 1810 historical novel, "The Scottish Chiefs". It is the epic and romantic story of William Wallace’s and Robert the Bruce’s fourteenth-century crusade for Scottish independence from English rule. King Edward I of England, the tyrannical ruler whose defeat the Scots sought, sits astride his horse, accompanied by his knights, looking down upon the field of battle below.
