Context
Recalling a lazy day along the watery shores of Connecticut, where Homer painted the summer of 1880, the painting was acquired from the artist the year it was painted, by the Longfellow family of Portland, Maine, relatives of the famous poet who was born there.

Featured in “Maine and American Art: Farnsworth Art Museum” with thanks to the Henry Luce Foundation and Wyeth Foundation for American Art.
