Context
One of Nevelson’s characteristic expressive paintings of the late 1940s, it depicts the warm familial world of a mother and child with a pet cat. This kind of familial harmony was something she sought but rarely found, having separated from her husband years before divorcing him, and struggling to be both a mother and artist as she pursued her career.

Featured in “Maine and American Art: Farnsworth Art Museum” with thanks to the Henry Luce Foundation and Wyeth Foundation for American Art.
