Context
Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Edna St. Vincent Millay (1892-1950) was born in Rockland, Maine and moved in avant-garde circles in Greenwich Village and in Paris where she posed for Berenice Abbott. Her talents as a poet and playwright, her flamboyance and political activism won her a presence in all that was current among the intellectuals and artists of her day.
