Context
Abbott began her independent explorations into scientific photography two decades before she was commissioned to photograph scientific phenomena in 1958 for the Physical Sciences Study Committee at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Her innovative photographs for books describing physical principles for the layman included depictions of swinging pendulums, bouncing balls, magnetic and other wave patterns. Her photo-illustrations helped readers understand more intuitively the often complex actions usually described by diagram and mathematical formulae.
