Context
After the Civil War, the largest plow manufacturer in Maine was the Augustine Hussey Manufacturing Company in New Berwick. In 1870, the company produced over 800 plows and 500 wooden handles; that same year thirty-two thousand plows were made in Maine. By 1878, there were thirty-two manufacturers of agricultural implements in Maine.
