Context
Davey made two trips to Monhegan, with Robert Henri and George Bellows in summer 1911, and again in 1914 with Bellows and their wives. At first glance the sun-filled skies in this 1914 painting obscure the effect of “a blow,” a summer storm whose waves toss ships perilously close to the rocky shore. 1914 was the three hundredth anniversary of Captain John Smith’s landing on the island, celebrated in an exhibition of works made by painters on the island, including both Davey and Bellows.
