Context
This painting depicts one of Monhegan Island’s teenagers, Orca Bates, a frequent subject of the artist’s work. He stands next to an imposing tall clock in the room’s shadows as the midday sun streams through the screen door. The juxtaposition of the adolescent boy, wearing a military style tunic, with the antique clock suggest the odd mixture of past and present on the isolated island.
