Context
This majestic large-scale scene of an ice flow is characteristic of both Welliver’s love of the pictorial opportunities in Maine and his talent in depicting this world with subtle color harmonies, a skill he learned from his teacher at Yale, famed color theorist Josef Albers (1888-1976).

Featured in “Maine and American Art: Farnsworth Art Museum” with thanks to the Henry Luce Foundation and Wyeth Foundation for American Art.
