Context
The juxtaposition of the purple irises in bloom in the foreground against the white of the lighthouse in the background gives energy to the composition, both in the disparate scale and contrasting colors of the flowers and the structure. The lighthouse is part of a complex of buildings on Southern Island, some twenty miles from Tenants Harbor, which the artist bought from his parents in 1978. For Wyeth, “To live in a lighthouse is the quintessence of Maine, as they are icons in our history.”
