Context
N.C. was drawn to the dramatic scenery of Monhegan, here the turquoise-tinted sea and pounding surf at the base of the rocky cliff known as Black Head. Beneath a dark but cloudy sky, a sailboat traverses the island’s always dangerous waters. The painting is one of many he made in Maine during the 1930s in an effort to demonstrate his talents as a painter.

Featured in “Maine and American Art: Farnsworth Art Museum” with thanks to the Henry Luce Foundation and Wyeth Foundation for American Art.
