Context
Charles Lewis Fox founded art schools in Portland and Bridgton after studies in Paris. His portraits of Penobscot Indians include this one of Elizabeth Andrews, who would have been about sixteen at the time. She sits on the edge of the Penobscot River, on one of over two hundred islands comprising the Penobscot Nation in Maine.
