Context
Seasonal activities as depicted in "Mending Nets" were part of the endless cycle of gear-maintenance for fisherman like the ones shown here on Monhegan Island, Maine. In 1905 Monhegans’ fishermen enthralled artist Rockwell Kent (1882-1971), “I envied them their strength, their knowledge of boats and their familiarity with that awesome portion of the infinite, the sea. I envied them their worker’s human dignity.” ("It’s Me, Oh Lord", 1905)

Featured in “Maine and American Art: Farnsworth Art Museum” with thanks to the Henry Luce Foundation and Wyeth Foundation for American Art.
