Context
Beginning in the late 1930s up to the last decade of his life, Andrew Wyeth depicted scenes in and around the city of Rockland. He typically preferred rural scenes rather than urban ones, but the worn down buildings near Rockland’s working harbor in this watercolor are similar in character to the rural houses and barns he often painted in both Maine and Pennsylvania.

Featured in “Maine and American Art: Farnsworth Art Museum” with thanks to the Henry Luce Foundation and Wyeth Foundation for American Art.
