Context
Commissioned by Charles Scribner’s Son for an illustrated version of a British 1855 historical novel, "Westward Ho! or the Voyages and Adventures of Sir Amyas Leigh", this painting shows pirates carrying off “Spanish Booty”. Set in Elizabethan England, the novel’s hero, Leigh, sails to the Caribbean and Venezuela in search of gold. Done mostly in tones of black, white, and gray, the painting’s only bright colors are the golden tones on the treasure chests on the pirates’ shoulders, suggesting the wealth inside them. The image was used for the book’s endpapers, which spanned across the two pages that made up the inside and back covers.

Featured in “Maine and American Art: Farnsworth Art Museum” with thanks to the Henry Luce Foundation and Wyeth Foundation for American Art.
