Context
James Fitzgerald believed in physically immersing himself in his subject matter, illustrated to great visceral effect in "Torchin'’". Fitzgerald composed the work from an eyewitness perspective as it is happening in real time, with the three dories facing each other and the fishermen in the process of capturing the fish attracted to the light of their torches at night.
