Context
Intensely spiritual and able to express his most private emotions through his art, Lewiston, Maine native Marsden Hartley painted six versions of this theme, a boat under sail in heavy seas and threatening skies, after two sons of friends were drowned with their cousin off Eastern Points, Nova Scotia in September, 1936.
