Context
Lane completed this view seen through a window from a room of the Castine, Maine home of the parents of his Gloucester friend Joseph L. Stevens, Jr. In this painting, somewhat sketchier than much of his studio work, Lane’s focus was his impression of landscape and light. Together, the highlit clouds, pink horizon, and foreground garden frame the small blue harbor dotted with white structures and sails of vessels returning at sunset.

Featured in “Maine and American Art: Farnsworth Art Museum” with thanks to the Henry Luce Foundation and Wyeth Foundation for American Art.
