Context
An unusual take on the not-so-classic pose of the anonymous nude, the portrait parallels works by such Peirce contemporaries as Marguerite Zorach (1887-1968), who often portrayed female nudes amid the patterned textiles of domestic surroundings. Peirce has given equal weight to the figure and to the floral design of the chair in which she sits, as if the woman and her surroundings are one.
