Context
Sailing distance from the Porter family’s Great Spruce Head Island, Eagle Island was also sparsely inhabited but dominated by natural features. Porter’s view has made it seem as if the lone building on a rise is held in place by the pines and low clouds that encircle it.

Featured in “Maine and American Art: Farnsworth Art Museum” with thanks to the Henry Luce Foundation and Wyeth Foundation for American Art.
