Context
Confidence and humor radiate as smoke swirls around a larger-than-life personality, suggested by a pose and an instant captured through the lens of Joyce Tenneson’s camera. Her portrait of artist Robert Indiana, known world-wide for his timeless "LOVE" design, was made at a time when Indiana was engaged with multiple painting, sculpture, and printmaking projects from his home and studio on the island of Vinalhaven, Island, just off the coast of Rockland, Maine.

Joyce Tenneson is an award-winning photographer known especially for her portraits of women. She has a summer home and studio in Rockport, a midcoast Maine village some fifteen miles from Vinalhaven.

Featured in “Maine and American Art: Farnsworth Art Museum” with thanks to the Henry Luce Foundation and Wyeth Foundation for American Art.
