Context
The setting may be not far from Otter Cliff in Acadia National Park or inland from the cliffs that ring Monhegan Island. Maine’s dark woods harbor old trees of growths and secrets. Tall mushrooms and ferns below, each leaf and texture in perfect focus complete an almost magical scene with a mysterious aura—heady enough for fairytales.

Featured in “Maine and American Art: Farnsworth Art Museum” with thanks to the Henry Luce Foundation and Wyeth Foundation for American Art.
