Context
Early in her career Nevelson was both a painter and sculptor, and her paintings from the 1940s and 1950s are often portraits of herself, her family, and her friends. Heavily impastoed with thick layers of paint, they often have a three-dimensional character. The figure here may be either the artist’s son, Mike, or her then partner artist Ralph Rosenberg (1913-1992).

Featured in “Maine and American Art: Farnsworth Art Museum” with thanks to the Henry Luce Foundation and Wyeth Foundation for American Art.
