Context
This detail of tiles, extracted from the street-level façade of a building in New York, offers a view of pure shape and contrast. Burckhardt focused on a pattern that seems to suggest overlapping sounds and sites of the city—an abstraction of the kind experienced in his short, black and white films synthesized with jazzy soundtracks by John Cage (1912-1992) and others.

Featured in “Maine and American Art: Farnsworth Art Museum” with thanks to the Henry Luce Foundation and Wyeth Foundation for American Art.
