Context
Long-time summer refuge for the rich and famous, the islands of Vinalhaven and North Haven were originally referred to as the “Fox Islands”, named after the profusion of silver-gray foxes seen by Englishman explorer Martin Pring (1580-1626) in 1603. Painted from the North Haven dock of friend and fellow artist Frank W. Benson (1862-1951), Metcalf’s view depicts the Fox Island thoroughfare between North Haven and Vinalhaven Islands in Maine.

Featured in “Maine and American Art: Farnsworth Art Museum” with thanks to the Henry Luce Foundation and Wyeth Foundation for American Art.
