Context
The sailor’s dream was to pass safely into harbor after the adventures and the perils of lengthy sea journeys. The various sea creatures depicted in this sculpted scene of the ship and its surroundings hint at a story from sailors’ mythology. This unusual ship model, found in a corner of the old Steamboat Wharf Shed at the end of Tillson Avenue in Rockland, Maine may be the work of a sailor rather than an Asian export piece.
