Context
Kent traveled widely and wrote prolifically of his adventures in such distant northern regions as Alaska, Newfoundland, and Greenland, places that also inspired him. He went to Illorsuit, Greenland in summer 1929 and again in the winter of 1931-32, when this scene of seal hunting was likely done, one of several capturing everyday life in the tiny, self-sustaining community.

Featured in “Maine and American Art: Farnsworth Art Museum” with thanks to the Henry Luce Foundation and Wyeth Foundation for American Art.
