Context
Cady depicts the construction of the last wooden work-boat made in Friendship, Maine, where many generations of families have been building and launching boats from its harbor. In boat-builder’s terms, the work depicts the ribbands (they hold the bent frames to the shape of the hull), molds (temporary wood structures defining the shape of the boat), and dawgs (temporarily nailed to the molds to space them), and overall, the boat balanced level by the use of a plumb bob line.

Featured in “Maine and American Art: Farnsworth Art Museum” with thanks to the Henry Luce Foundation and Wyeth Foundation for American Art.
