Context
The lady is Mary Kemble Webb, from a prominent Salem family and mother of four sons. She looks directly at the viewer, self-assured and secure in her social position. Benson’s ability to transform what seem like quick and spontaneous strokes of color into the sheen of silk and satin, recalls the brushwork of John Singer Sargent (1856-1925).

Featured in “Maine and American Art: Farnsworth Art Museum” with thanks to the Henry Luce Foundation and Wyeth Foundation for American Art.
