Context
Most impressive from its south face near the terminus of the Appalachian Trail, Mount Katahdin appears to rise from Chimney Pond at its base. For the last twenty-five years of his life, Fitzgerald visited Katahdin and the region around Baxter State Park, finding its inland waters and mountains to be as compelling a subject as Maine’s coastal islands.
