Context
The artist’s debt to Abstract Expressionist painter Willem de Kooning is evident in Hall’s work, yet she also reveals her effort to bring her own personal take to it. Hall, who later in life became president of the Rhode Island School of Design, was introduced to Maine by potter and painter Marvin “Red" Garner, her friend and mentor at the State University of New York in Potsdam. She also became friends with avant-garde painter and art dealer Betty Parsons, who like Garner, also summered in Maine.

Featured in “Maine and American Art: Farnsworth Art Museum” with thanks to the Henry Luce Foundation and Wyeth Foundation for American Art.
