Context
Travel to Europe took Thon to Spain where he was inspired by the jagged peaks of the Cantabrian Mountains. While there he sought to be more suggestive in his works, here expressing his interest in mood evoked by place. Though his landscape subject is eminently readable, its pattern of colors and combinations of light and shadow give it an aura of abstraction. Late in his career, Thon and his wife moved to Port Clyde, the village on the tip of the St. George peninsula.
