Context
Reproduced from a dye transfer print, this was the cover image of "In Wildness is the Preservation of the World", titled after Henry David Thoreau’s essay on walking, and the first of a series of Sierra Club books. Stephen Porter remembers assisting his father in the dye transfer process, and how he enjoyed its gradual results: “I loved to watch him through this three-color process-cyan, magenta and yellow. Each time he’d put a color on, the image would sort of leap out of the page.”

Featured in “Maine and American Art: Farnsworth Art Museum” with thanks to the Henry Luce Foundation and Wyeth Foundation for American Art.
