Context
In collaboration with the Sierra Club, Porter’s photographs of a trip down the Colorado River through Glen Canyon were compiled as "The Place No One Knew". Copies were sent to President Johnson, Secretary of Interior Stewart Udall, and every member of Congress, with a plea not to implement the Glen Canyon Dam and thereby inundate the canyon. The book was unsuccessful in stopping the dam, but its publication prompted public and government support for limiting future dam construction on western rivers.
