Context
The annual fall potato harvest in Aroostook County is but one of many seasonal rites of passage for children in Maine. This decades-old tradition known as the “Potato Recess” allows schools to close in the early fall for several weeks in order for children to pick potatoes. The tradition is in decline today as many schools are phasing out or ending the recess.

Featured in “Maine and American Art: Farnsworth Art Museum” with thanks to the Henry Luce Foundation and Wyeth Foundation for American Art.
