Context
Photographer Ansel Adams (1902-1984) enlarged Porter’s haunting image tenfold, in a 51 x 40 ½ - inch print for a 1973 exhibition at the University of New Mexico Art Museum in Albuquerque. In scaling up, Adams helped to amplify Porter’s emphasis upon the magnificence of the forest silhouettes that rise through damp air from hidden ecosystems beneath them.

Featured in “Maine and American Art: Farnsworth Art Museum” with thanks to the Henry Luce Foundation and Wyeth Foundation for American Art.
