Context
This life-size bust of Eve is derived from Jackson’s 1862 figure group, "Eve Mourning Over the Dead Body of Abel", which Jackson regarded as his most important work. Its biblical subject and restrained sexuality would have been popular among nineteenth-century audiences.

Featured in “Maine and American Art: Farnsworth Art Museum” with thanks to the Henry Luce Foundation and Wyeth Foundation for American Art.
